Recently, I had the opportunity with our staff to learn more about the history of New Orleans. One of the things that stood out as a result of certain events that occurred in the city (especially in the French Quarter), is a lasting belief in superstition. A superstition is “a blindly accepted belief or notion” and can include “a custom or act based on such a belief.”
I started thinking about superstition more, and I realized how well the theme fits in with our current Sunday studies. We are looking at lies people believe about God (AM service) and questions every Christian should answer (PM service). The world is not void of ideas and suggestions as “alternatives” to the truth. Ideas not thought through in light of God’s truth (for all truth is God’s truth) are, to a degree, merely “superstitious” ideas. It is no secret that our beliefs strongly influence our actions.
We need a better way of thinking and living than worldly “superstition.” Romans 12:2 tells us, “Be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind…” Let’s fill our minds with Biblical, true thoughts and then communicate that truth to others by the way we live! Philippians 4:8-9 says, “Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. Those things, which ye have both learned, and received, and heard, and seen in me, do: and the God of peace shall be with you.”
I look forward to seeing you on Sunday! If you’d like to discuss this email, follow the link below!
In Him,
