Many people are glad to see 2020 in the rear view mirror, but, of course, now we are in a new year, which means, well, we're still trying to figure that out.
I am praying 2021 will be filled with renewed faith, hope, and blessings. Thankfully, according to surveys, some of the folks doing the best after the first year of Covid-19 are those who have been faithful to church services! There is something to say about making sure our priority is still God. He is the only One Who can bring sanity and direction to life, and that is what we need!
This month, prayerfully ask God to work in your life and our lives together as we gut out time to not only read but also to heed His Word. This year, our theme is based on Psalm 119:105, which says, "Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path." Why do we need this?
Our world needs Christ's church to powerfully influence and lead it. However, fatal statistics from 2020 show that half of those who faithfully attended American churches before the pandemic (not including those who were unfaithful) are no longer attending church in-person or watching church services online. Considering the health of the "American Church," that's really bad! I am grateful that these statistics do not reflect Open Door, but the statistics underscore a great toll to the church that must be changed. Who is going to help?
First, let me express my thanks to those who have been faithful to attend services each week in-person or online. For those who have not been attending, I want to encourage you to start attending again. Now is a good and necessary time for the church to be the church, so we can be a part of the solution.
Second, I am praying Open Door can help. While our world needs help, apparently many Christians are also floundering in their walks with God. Satan has utilized Covid-19 as a weapon, and God promises the gates of Hell will not prevail against the church (Matthew 16:18). We know we can help with God's wisdom, but how?
The Bible is still true. We are called to both read and heed the Word of God. It provides the steps we need to take through uncertain and changing times.
This month, as we resolve and commit to managing our lives well for God's glory, let's watch Him honor our steps of faith and service according to the Bible.
I am praying you!
In Christ,
Pastor Dennis M. Schaffer
