Hello, friends!
The standing joke for 2020 is “What’s the least important thing you bought this year? A calendar!”
The reason we laugh is because it resonates with us humanly. Someone said the buzzword of 2020 is “uncertainty.” Peace is nonexistent in a world of uncertainty.
How did this happen? Six months ago, our nation was largely on an upward trajectory economically, in employment, morale, and other positive ways. Then Coronavirus, a silent storm, came, and it has not blown away yet. Add to it rioting, division, the destruction of memorials, political jockeying, ethnic tensions, broken families, rogue governmental systems, an explosion of mental illness and stress, the dissolving of common sense, confused investment markets, and an inebriated society, and—Voila!—you have the weird and more broken world in which we live.
Uncertainty is not the mantra of our nation, so this is shaky territory for the land of the free and the home of the brave. We are only an uncertain nation when we lose our compass, the God of our motto, for it is “In God We Trust.”
We need a real revival—we need God.
This weekend, Open Door and I invite you to celebrate the 244th birthday of the United States of America. As we gather together onsite and online, we want to do things differently.
Yes, we want a renewal of patriotism, but we know that true patriots fight first for God and then their country. God is the establisher of nations, and without Him we cannot stand. Our sights are on a city and a nation whose builder and maker is God.
Sunday at 9am and 10:30am, we will brandish the pledge each of us has made literally thousands of times to remind ourselves that we are “One Nation Under God.”
Our choir will sing live for the first time since Coronavirus, and some of our local politicians will attend and introduce themselves.
Then we are going to take a look in the Bible at what is needed to turn our country away from a collision course with the trash heap of history. We need God’s mercy.
If you believe this, too, would you come seek God’s mercy with us?
God has been doing great things at Open Door. We’ve seen souls saved, people surrendering to God’s will, guests making Open Door their church family, and new believers growing in God’s Word. God’s presence is real, and He is making a difference.
“One Nation Under God.” God removes all the uncertainty and gives us a peace that passes all understanding. Come claim that with us.
God bless you and the United States of America,
Pastor Dennis M. Schaffer
